- Form: Evergreen sprawling semi-woody shrub, reaching 4-5 ft.
- Leaves: Simple, opposite, serrate, glabrous
- Stem/Bark: Green turning semi-woody with age
- Flower: Purple, borne on spikes
- Fruit: Schizocarp
- Comments: Often confused with non-native Stachytarpheta urticifolia, but distinguished by scariously margins mostly above the middle of the floral bract, rather than below the middle
