- Family: Rubiaceae
- Form: Evergreen shrub, reaching 5-9 ft.
- Leaves: Simple, opposite, entire, dark green and glossy with prominent veins
- Stem/Bark: Brown
- Flower: White, borne in clusters
- Fruit: Drupe, dark red
- Comments: Compact forms are available in the trade, as are two other native coffee species, P. ligustrifolia and P. sulzerni
