- Form: Deciduous or semi-deciduous shrub, reaching 6-8'
- Leaves: Simple, opposite, serrate margins, pubescent, prominent veins
- Stem/Bark: Brown or gray, with lenticels
- Flower: Pink to lavendar, flowers in axillary cymes, multiple stamens with long filaments
- Fruit: Purple, berry-like drupe occuring in sessile clusters, persistant and highly ornamental
- Comments: The 'alba' variety has white fruit
